A violent storm that swept through Belgium on Friday afternoon caused substantial flooding at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
The circuit was hosting the Spa Euro Race, featuring various sportscar and prototype categories, when heavy rainfall swept through the region.
Water cascaded along the circuit between La Source and Eau Rouge, causing damage to the track, and resulting in a flood at the appropriately named complex.
An access tunnel, located beneath the old pit lane, was also flooded.
All track activity was suspended and the decision was taken to abandon the meeting.
Officials at the venue confirmed in a statement that they are “working on restoring the track so that all activities can be resumed as soon as possible.”
Spa-Francorchamps is due to welcome Formula 1 on the weekend of August 27 to 29.
Hopes of a strong fan attendance were boosted on Friday when Belgium’s government set out revised measures.
Under the current roadmap, Belgium currently plans to allow 75,000 spectators at mass events from August 13, with all attendees required either to have had both Covid-19 vaccine shots or a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours.
