Silverstone has been chosen as one of the venues that may host a Sprint Race during the 2021 Formula 1 season as part of a new weekend format.
The new arrangement would see qualifying held on a Friday afternoon, which would set the starting grid for a Sprint Race on Saturday.
The grand prix on Sunday would see drivers start in the order they finished the Sprint Race the day before.
The scheme has received support from the teams, however some affirmed that the exact details of the proposal needed clarification before they gave complete backing.
The Sprint Races are likely to be trialled at three weekends this year, with Silverstone being given the nod as one of the venues.
“We are finalising the intricacies of it,” F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali told the Daily Mail.
“For sure we do not want to take away the prestige of the grand prix itself. That will remain the climax of the weekend. We will have qualifying on Friday and then ‘sprint qualifying’ on Saturday.”
Domenicali added that no podium ceremony would follow the 30-minute race, however Championship points would be awarded.
“It will provide some meaningful action the day before the race. It will give fans, media and broadcasters more content. It will last about half an hour. There will be no podium celebration. That will wait until Sunday.
“But points will be awarded — how many is yet to be decided — towards the World Championship and determine the grid for the race itself. What I can say is that Silverstone will hold a Sprint Race.”
The British Grand Prix weekend is currently scheduled to be the 10th round of the 2021 season, held from July 16 to July 18.
