Pirelli reveals 2021 18-inch tyre test schedule

Pirelli has announced its 2021 testing schedule, which will take place over 28 days, for the 18-inch tyres that will be introduced next season.

All current Formula 1 teams bar Williams will take part in the tests throughout the year, which began last week in Jerez with Ferrari.

The remaining tests will take place at eight separate circuits, with running set to be completed by mid-September.

The tyres will arrive in F1 in 2022 alongside a major technical overhaul that aims to improve racing and competition.

The next test will take place in Bahrain across three days from March 30 to April 1, with Ferrari conducting a single day of running, while Alpine is present for two.

Another test will take place on April 20 – 21 at Imola, before four more days of running occur in May at Barcelona and Paul Ricard.

Spielberg and Silverstone will host tests in July following their respective grands prix, before the final two events are held at Budapest and Magny-Cours.

The tests will vary in wet and dry tyre running, with the present teams supplying mule cars to provide Pirelli with the relevant data.

While Pirelli is hopeful of getting through the schedule with no interruptions, the marque’s Head of F1 Mario Isola affirmed that due to Covid-19, “it’s possible that our planned schedule for this year may have to be modified.”

He continued: “As a result, we have a back-up plan too. Nonetheless, we have put together a programme that should enable us to pick up solidly from where we left off in 2019 and finalise the specification for a new generation of tyre under fresh regulations that will give Formula 1 a very different look next year.

“Many thanks to all the teams for their support in providing simulations and mule cars, giving us a good base to work from.

“We will be testing both our slick and wet prototype 18-inch tyres for 2022: we started already at Jerez in Spain for three days with Ferrari, and we will end up at France’s Magny-Cours circuit with Alpine in September.”
