Charles Leclerc returned to Formula 1 test action on Tuesday morning with Ferrari in the aftermath of his Covid-19 diagnosis.

Leclerc salvaged two podium finishes for Ferrari during its torrid 2020 campaign and finished eighth in the Drivers’ Championship.

The Monegasque youngster, under contract with Ferrari through 2024, revealed on January 14 that he was self-isolating at home after testing positive for Covid-19.

Leclerc became the fifth Formula 1 driver, after Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll, Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris, to contract the virus.

"Firstly, we are very happy to welcome Mari to the new programme. He is a promising talent with a strong track record, natural speed, and a determined mindset, but he is also an incredibly well-rounded athlete – a trait we value in motorsport. Our aim is to support his development in every area, from racecraft and technical feedback to media, fitness, and personal growth, preparing him for the demands of top-level racing. "We are also proud to launch the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team Driver Academy, a programme designed to identify, support, and develop exceptional driving talent. This initiative gives us the opportunity to shape the next generation of drivers, helping them grow into the complete package both on and off the track. Guiding young talent through some of the most challenging and competitive phases of their careers is not only a privilege, but a shared passion across the entire team."

Ferrari has organised a five-day test with its 2018-spec SF71H at Fiorano and Leclerc got behind the wheel in sunny conditions on Tuesday morning.

Leclerc is due to remain in the car for the rest of the day.

Giuliano Alesi, Marcus Armstrong and Robert Shwartzman kicked off the test on Monday while Leclerc’s new team-mate, Carlos Sainz, is due to receive his first outing for Ferrari on Wednesday.

Haas racer Mick Schumacher and Ferrari tester Callum Ilott are due to drive the car later in the week.

Under Formula 1 regulations teams are permitted to carry out private running in machinery that is two or more years old.
