Channel 4 has appointed Alex Jacques as its new lead Formula 1 commentator for the 2021 season.
It was confirmed earlier this month that Ben Edwards, who has been with the channel since it took over the coverage from the BBC, will step down from the role at the end of 2020.
Jacques has been the voice of Formula 1’s feeder series since 2015 and for the last three years has commentated on Formula 1 events for the championship’s in-house F1TV channel.
He will now make the move across to Channel 4 to join David Coulthard in the commentary box at Formula 1 events in 2021.
“I’m delighted to join the Channel 4 F1 team,” said Jacques. “As an avid Formula 1 fan since the age of 9, I know how much the broadcast means for everyone’s weekend.
“It will be hugely exciting to share races with so many fans and join a team which commands such respect in F1 and TV circles alike. I can’t wait to get started in 2021.”
Channel 4 currently shows highlights of all grands prix as well as live coverage of the British Grand Prix.
Channel 4’s F1 Programme Editor John Curtis added: “Once we knew Ben was stepping down, Alex was our first choice. He is an outstanding talent and his knowledge is exceptional.
“Lead commentary is such an important role for the production and I have no doubt that Alex will deliver for both our current fans, as well as new ones.
“His passion and enthusiasm for the sport shines through on air and will work well with David’s excellent analysis and opinion. It’s great to be able to confirm that he’s joining the C4F1 team for the potentially record-breaking 2021 season.”
“His passion and enthusiasm……” isn’t the only requirement. It has to be backed by in depth knowledge and a 3 octave range in his voice which seems to be a requirement for lead commentators during exciting incidents.
