Hulkenberg says Red Bull talks have gone quiet
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Nico Hulkenberg says discussions regarding a return to Formula 1 in 2021 have become “quieter” in recent weeks amid consistent links to Red Bull for next year.

Hulkenberg is believed to be a front-running contender for the second seat at the team, which is currently occupied by Alexander Albon, who has struggled throughout the year.

On three occasions this season, Hulkenberg has stepped in at Racing Point due to their drivers, Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll, contracting Covid-19.

Hulkenberg’s stock only rose after impressing at each outing, however the German says the situation has calmed in recent times.

When asked by ServusTV if he has signed a contract, the former Renault driver responded: “I’ve signed a new contract, a home loan and savings contract! No, joking aside, at the moment it has become a little quieter again.”

Regarding other options outside Red Bull, Hulkenberg said: “When a door opens, it’s completely unpredictable.

“The last time it was super-spontaneous. But of course it can happen. We know how unpredictable the situation is. That’s why I keep fit.

“For many teams, the decisions [for 2021] have already been made. I had my two chances [in 2020] and I took them.

“I am in contact with some people. I also have the people who support me; I conduct the initial discussions myself. I will let the matter come to me now.”

After stepping in for Perez at both Silverstone races, Hulkenberg was called up at the last minute to replace Stroll at the Nurburgring, driving the car for the first time that weekend in qualifying.

Starting from the back of the grid, Hulkenberg climbed his way through the field to take eighth place at his home grand prix.

“It’s not like driving is alien,” Hulkenberg said of his most recent outing with Racing Point. “There are special circumstances, you have to make the best of it.

“I like situations like that. In Q1 at the Nurburgring I drove three laps and then the race started. You see it as an opportunity.

“I knew the Racing Point was a good car. So what did I have to lose? The expectations are low anyway.”
