Kvyat: AlphaTauri should target Ferrari in standings

IMOLA, ITALY - NOVEMBER 01: Daniil Kvyat of Russia and Scuderia AlphaTauri talks to the media in the Pitlane before the F1 Grand Prix of Emilia Romagna at Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari on November 01, 2020 in Imola, Italy. Daniil Kvyat says Ferrari is a “target” for AlphaTauri across the remaining races of the 2020 campaign as the team tries to claim sixth in the standings.

Renault, Racing Point and McLaren are locked in a tight three-way battle for third position in the Constructors’ Championship, split by just one point, with Ferrari and AlphaTauri further adrift.

Ferrari holds an advantage over AlphaTauri but that gap was reduced to 14 points at Imola as Kvyat overhauled Charles Leclerc to finish in fourth position.

“We recovered only a couple of points, better than nothing,” said Kvyat.

“Of course, I think it’s going to be very close battle until the end. It seems like our pace is similar, sometimes in qualifying they look impressive, but in the race we catch up.

“We’ll try to do our best to beat them in the championship. Of course that’s a target, but we know it’s not easy, and we cannot think about it too much. We just need to focus on our job.”

Kvyat has scored points in four of the last six events and attributed his improved results to a greater understanding of the AT01 since mid-season.

“I believe always more and more in our potential, as a team, and me as a driver,” he said.

“I keep feeling better in the car through the year. You know, there are some things that we understand – I mean, my side of the garage understands now – I wish we understood them a bit more in the beginning, how to make the car work a bit better.

“But we really got there, since Spa it was a good step. I mean, Pierre [Gasly] has been very fast this year. But since Spa, if you look at it, we were really close and very competitive.

“It’s very important for me to get this weight out, you know… like very strong result, very strong race, and I’m happy.”
