Hakkinen certain Schumacher will have F1 seat ‘very soon’

Double Formula 1 World Champion Mika Hakkinen believes Mick Schumacher will have a race seat in Formula 1 “very soon”, amid his performances in Formula 2.

Hakkinen, World Champion in 1998 and 1999, spent several years of his career battling Schumacher’s father, Michael, with their rivalry regarded as one of the sport’s greatest.

Schumacher, 21, won the 2018 Formula 3 title and secured Ferrari backing upon his graduation to Formula 2 last year.

He also tested Formula 1 machinery with Ferrari and Alfa Romeo – the team with which he has been linked for the 2021 season.

The German got behind the wheel of his father’s 2004 title-winning Ferrari Formula 1 car prior to the Tuscan Grand Prix on Sunday for a demonstration event.

He currently leads the Formula 2 standings with three rounds of the season left to run.

“It was very nice to see Mick driving his father’s 2004 Ferrari on a demonstration run,” Hakkinen said in his Unibet column.

“It reminded us how great those V10 engines sounded and the incredible success that Michael achieved with that car and the others with which he won five world titles.

“It is great to see Mick’s career progressing well, including now leading the Formula 2 Championship, and I am certain he will find a seat in Formula 1 very soon.

“It will be a special moment for him, the Schumacher family and Formula 1 when it happens.”

Schumacher holds a slender eight-point lead in the Formula 2 standings, over fellow Ferrari protégé Callum Ilott, with Renault-backed Christian Lundgaard only a further eight behind.

Only 39 points covers the top seven drivers in a category where 48 points are available at each event.
