Vettel ‘can’t put an answer’ on SF1000 struggles

Sebastian Vettel (GER) Ferrari SF1000. Spanish Grand Prix, Saturday 15th August 2020. Barcelona, Spain.

Sebastian Vettel says there are still aspects of Ferrari’s SF1000 he cannot understand after another subdued display at Formula 1’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Vettel suffered his third Q2 exit of the 2020 season as he finished 11th during qualifying at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, though came just 0.002s shy of making Q3.

“It’s up and down to be honest,” said Vettel on the car. “There’s still some things I can’t really put an answer to but I’m trying to do everything I can and ignore all the things that might not be right and do the best that I can, that’s all I can do at the moment.

“The first sector was OK, but then in the middle sector, the car started to be more and more nervous, I struggled in particular Turn 7, losing the rear halfway so it was difficult to judge how much speed to carry in, also Turn 5 was very tricky for me this afternoon. That’s the middle sector.

“Then the last sector, it got better towards the end, but still very tricky to find the right balance. It was one of the better sessions this weekend, but obviously not good enough.”

Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc fared little better and will start from ninth on the grid.

“I struggled massively with the car today, especially with the front, so we need to understand why this happened and why we didn’t manage to cure that issue,” said Leclerc.

“Today was just poor. Hopefully we can try something tomorrow, and hopefully it will be better.”
