Alex Zanardi remains in a serious condition in Siena hospital after his second neurosurgery, and no further updated will be issued until there is a significant development.

Zanardi sustained a severe head injury when he was involved in a road accident on June 19 and was airlifted to Siena hospital.

Doctors performed neurosurgery and maxillofacial surgery before placing Zanardi in an induced coma in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Zanardi underwent a second neurosurgery on Monday which lasted approximately two-and-a-half-hours.

On Tuesday doctors provided an update, confirming that “about 24 hours after the operation [Zanardi] presents stationary clinical conditions and a stable course from the neurological point of view, whose picture remains serious.

“Zanardi is hospitalised in the intensive care unit, where he remains sedated and intubated, and the prognosis remains confidential.

“In agreement with the family, no other medical bulletins will be issued in the absence of significant developments.”

The 53-year-old was on his handcycle when the accident occurred.

Zanardi, who started 41 Formula 1 grands prix either side of two CART titles, has competed in handcycling after suffering a double leg amputation in 2001, winning gold and silver medals at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games.
