McLaren Formula 1 drivers Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz Jr. returned to action on Thursday as they drove old-specification Formula 3 cars at a wet Silverstone.

A handful of Formula 1 teams have got back to the circuit across the past couple of weeks, with Mercedes running its W08, Renault its R.S.18 and Racing Point its current-spec RP20.

But due to the nature of its deal with engine supplier Renault, McLaren does not have operational Formula 1 machinery that it can bring to a circuit.

Norris, who had already driven the Carlin-run Dallara F317 at Silverstone earlier this month, was joined by outgoing team-mate Sainz Jr. at the British Grand Prix venue.

The test took place in wet conditions in the wake of heavy and persistent rain affecting the region on Thursday.

Both Norris and Sainz Jr. raced for Carlin in their junior single-seater career, with the Briton claiming the 2017 Formula 3 title while driving for the squad.

Ferrari is also understood to be in action at Fiorano today, in an old-spec car, after Charles Leclerc carried out a demonstration run early in the morning through Maranello in its 2020 car.
