Drivers have been very active in F1 discussions – Grosjean

Romain Grosjean (FRA) Haas F1 Team. Australian Grand Prix, Thursday 12th March 2020. Albert Park, Melbourne, Australia.

Formula 1’s drivers have been “very active” in discussing the championship’s impending return, according to Haas’ Romain Grosjean, who also acts as a Director of the GPDA.

Formula 1 is aiming to start its 2020 season with successive races in Austria in July, followed by two races in Britain, though these are set to be derailed by the government’s quarantine plans.

Grosjean, along with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, is a Director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, which is chaired by ex-Formula 1 podium finisher Alexander Wurz.

“We have got a WhatsApp group and it has been very active, I must say. [There’s been] a lot of discussions on different subjects,” Grosjean told Sky Sports F1.

“We had a call with Formula 1, Chase Carey and Ross [Brawn]. I just couldn’t make the call, but I know Alex and Sebastian were on it, and then I got the feedback.

“We are trying to be as much as we can involved; trying to help the best we can because to help the teams we need to go racing earlier than later.”

Grosjean added that drivers are aware they will face a different situation at grands prix this year, due to the absence of fans, and the altered travel arrangements.

“It’s going to be normal and abnormal at the same time,” said the Haas racer.

“We’re going to go back to racing and driving cars, but also we’ll have a limited amount of people around and no spectators.

“So, some things will be very different and some things will be the same.

“It’s going to be hard to be away [for a long period], but we’re all aware that could happen. We are enjoying the time that we have now but obviously once you start going racing, it could be four races in a row in Europe and if we go to Asia, is it going to be the same thing? We may be away for a month.

“So we’ve just got to be prepared. It’s going to be different, it’s not going to be what we used to have in terms of flying [to a venue] as late as you can and as early off [back home] as you can.”
