Formula 1’s return to action in July will act as a blueprint for other motorsport series sanctioned by the FIA on how to run under Covid-19 restrictions, according to governing body president Jean Todt.

In a video message to FIA colleagues, stakeholders and organisers, Todt said F1’s return, which is currently scheduled for July 5 with a double-header Austrian Grand Prix, would be done in a way that ensures everyone’s safety and that the lessons learned from it would be shared with other series and circuits.

“Regarding our championships, our aim is to resume them as soon as possible whilst protecting the health of the people involved in their organisation, and in keeping with the instructions of the competent authorities,” said the Frenchman.

“In Formula 1 we hope to be able to restart the season this summer with the first Grand Prix in Austria on the weekend of 3 to 5 July.

“We will be able to share the learnings and processes to run motorsport under Covid-19 restrictions with all of you in order to restart all our competitions and grassroots motorsport as quickly as possible.”

Todt also addressed the ongoing financial concerns raised by the pandemic and said discussions would be ongoing.

“In parallel, the discussions around the financial sustainability of our motorsport championships will continue to be held with our promoters, the manufactures and teams in regular meetings.”
