Sette Camara returns to Red Bull as test and reserve driver

Red Bull has announced former academy driver Sergio Sette Camara will become the official test and reserve driver for the team as well as its sister outfit AlphaTauri.

The Brazilian had been part of the McLaren team in a test and development role throughout 2019 but has left the role to rejoin former backers, Red Bull.

Sette Camara was formerly part of the Red Bull Junior Academy for the 2015 and ’16 seasons before being dropped ahead prior to the start of the 2017 campaign.

The 21-year old has completed three seasons in the FIA Formula 2 championship and ended the 2019 season in fourth place after two wins and two pole positions.

The result now makes him eligible for a racing Formula 1 Superlicence.

Alongside his reserve driver role, Sette Camara will link-up with long-time Red Bull driver, Sebastien Buemi who will continue in his role for the Milton-Keynes-based outfit.

Both drivers will work together on testing and show-running duties across the 2020 season.

Sette Camara also has test and reserve driving duties for the GEOX Dragon Formula E team.

There is also still the potential for Brazilian to race in 2020 after he remains linked with Carlin’s IndyCar outfit, having tested for the British outfit in pre-season testing at the Circuit of The Americas with a seat at the team remaining yet to be filled.

“I am extremely happy to join the Red Bull family as Official Test & Reserve driver for the 2020 Formula One season alongside Sébastian,” said Sette Camara.

“I’ve been watching F1 since I was five years old and I’m humbled to have been given this opportunity to work with Scuderia AlphaTauri and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing.”
