Mahindra Racing is confident that it has rectified the issues that it faced during the Santiago E-Prix ahead of the fourth race of the 2019/20 campaign in Mexico City.
Switching to a new powertrain supplier in ZF for the start of Season 6, the British-based Indian marque experienced a slow start, taking only two points from the opening two rounds of the present competition.
In Santiago, the team experienced an upturn in form, however, with Pascal Wehrlein taking fourth place and 12 points from the the Chilean Parque O’Higgins Circuit.
While this allowed the squad to advance to 10th in the Teams’ Standings, a number of issues compounded the outfit’s points intake, with continued reliability problems plauguing Jerome d’Ambrosio – the Belgian failing to start the second race in Diriyah after losing power on the grid while similar issues followed in qualifying for Santiago.
As Formula E returns to the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Team Principal Dilbagh Gill is confident that his Mahindra team has turned a corner, with added motivation and improved understanding placing the team in a better position for this weekend’s E-Prix:
“The issues that we had in Santiago have only fueled our motivation even further ahead of the Mexico E-Prix,” said Gill.
“The team has been working extremely hard in the four-week break between races to have a better understanding of what caused these problems at the last event and we’re confident that we have rectified these.”
The Mexico City E-Prix has been a cursed race for Mahindra over recent seasons, with team-mates Nick Heidfeld and Felix Rosenqvist colliding in 2017, Rosenqvist retiring from the lead in 2018, and Wehrlein running out of usable energy on the cusp of his maiden Formula E victory last season.
As such, Mahindra is longing to put its recurring problems firmly into the past this weekend while a longer circuit layout brings a new challenge to teams:
“Mexico is one of the fastest tracks on the Formula E calendar and the new layout brings a new challenge,” added Gill.
“We’re ready to put our Mexican demons behind us from the last three years which have caused heartbreak for Mahindra Racing and have a successful and kind Mexico E-Prix for the team.”
