Valtteri Bottas was audibly angry after his high-speed crash in the Mexico City Grand Prix, in an unbroadcast radio message after his Cadillac came to a stop in the barriers.
The Finn was approaching Turn 1 from the long start-finish straight on Lap 42 when the MAC-26’s front-left suspension let go as he braked.
As a result, the car was sent into a spin, leaving Bottas a helpless passenger as it careened into the barriers, which were in need of repair, and therefore sparked a red flag period of the race.
It capped off another miserable weekend for the veteran Bottas, who suffered a viral infection at the start of the weekend, as well as frequent questioning about ongoing speculation regarding his future with the American Silverstone-based squad.
The impact took the wind out of Bottas’ sails, as he remained in the car for some time before being able to extricate himself from it unaided. He was excused from post-race media duty after a trip to the medical centre, where he was given the all-clear.
But the discomfort of the crash did not deter Bottas from making his feelings very clear afterwards, in an exchange with race engineer John Howard.
