Tom Ingram wins at wet Silverstone in BTCC Race 3

Tom Ingram took a firm victory at a soaked Silverstone in the British Touring Car Championship‘s Race 3, with now-champ Ash Sutton behind.

Dan Lloyd started despite being unsure on his engine’s status after Race 2’s DNS, owing to his wastegate melting, while Osamu Kawashima did not enter the race – with his Team VERTU Hyundai suffering from misfires and the engine cutting out through Sunday.

Having inherited pole position from the reverse-grid draw, Aiden Moffat led the field away through Copse. However, he ran wide on exit and opened the door for Árón Taylor-Smith and Dan Rowbottom to surge to P1 and P2 from P3 and P5.

Adam Morgan also jumped up three positions to P5 on the opening lap, before falling on lap 2, as CPRL teammate Rowbottom surged into the lead at the exit of Luffield.

Taylor-Smith then found himself under pressure from Moffat and Ingram, as both found their way past for P2 and P3.

Ash Sutton, now a five-time Drivers’ Champion, made his first mark on Race 3 on lap 4 as he pipped Taylor-Smith for P4 at Luffield with a fine switchback.

Despite Rowbottom building up an advantage over the first five laps, Moffat set a fastest lap on his fifth effort and dove down the inside of Rowbottom at Brooklands on the sixth tour – claiming the lead.

Ingram and Sutton would then renew acquaintances on lap 7, with the pair battling through Brooklands and settling as the eighth lap began. Despite pressure from Sutton behind, who ran wide at Brooklands, Ingram would sweep around the outside of Rowbottom’s Mercedes at Woodcote and lead into Copse as lap 9 began.

With Rowbottom perhaps struggling with misting issues on his windscreen, Sutton delivered his now-trademark switchback at Luffield to take P3 at the end of lap 9. Potentially also struggling, Morgan had dropped to P11 as his teammate fell once more to P6 – now behind Gordon Shedden.

Diving to the inside of Moffat’s Audi at Luffield, Ingram momentarily took the lead, though Moffat would fight back. However, the Hyundai eventually prevailed around the outside at Copse – giving Ingram P1 on lap 12.

One charging drive already under his belt this weekend, Sutton once again dove down the inside of a competitor at Luffield and stole Moffat’s P2 on lap 13. With two seconds of gap, Ingram set a fastest lap as track conditions started to improve.

Shedden would continue a firm eight-place climb by jumping ahead of Taylor-Smith at Beckett’s, though the Irishman appeared to make it easy for his MB Motorsport teammate. Though, a lockup at the same corner on lap 18 saw Taylor-Smith momentarily back through before both Shedden and Dan Cammish got past the Toyota.

By the end, it was a calm win for Ingram who won by nearly five seconds. Sutton followed, with Moffat rounding out the podium. Shedden finished P4 in a strong result for his Independents’ hopes, as Cammish recovered to P5.

Tom Chilton finished P6, with Josh Cook, Taylor Smith, and the CPRL pair of Rowbottom and Morgan rounding out the top 10.

Charles Rainford finished P11, with WSR teammate Daryl De Leon behind, Sam Osborne in P13, Chris Smiley following, and Lewis Gilbert P15.
