Ash Sutton wins record-breaking fifth BTCC title in Silverstone Race 2

Ash Sutton claimed a record-breaking fifth Drivers’ Championship in Silverstone‘s Race 2, after a sensational drive to P1 from P12.

After a drive that puts the emphasis on his unprecedented season, he now sits clear of Andy Rouse and Colin Turkington as the man with the most titles in British Touring Car Championship history.

2026 has been an incredible year for the NAPA Racing UK driver, perhaps the most incredible year in the series, and winning the title with four races to spare is a fair reward.

A superb Tom Chilton start saw him immediately to P2, while Daryl De Leon also got by Mikey Doble as another poor start plagued the Audi. While all was going on behind him, Aiden Moffat took advantage to sprint away – before encountering Osamu Kawashima who became lapped after just one full lap.

From his P12 start, Sutton had already popped himself to P4, plus the fastest lap point he required to become Drivers’ Champion, by the end of the third lap.

Doble continued to fall on lap 4, with Adam Morgan, Gordon Shedden, and Charles Rainford all getting by as he dropped to P8.

At the end of lap 5, Sutton would go one better by getting the overspeed on Chilton out of Woodcote and going around the outside through Copse. While, at the front, De Leon jumped ahead of Moffat with a great move into Brooklands.

Brooklands started to become the favoured overtaking spot of the pack, with Sutton and Morgan both getting past Moffat and Chilton respectively. With Sutton having all the boost for once compared to De Leon’s eight laps, he would catch and pass the leader with a superb dummy at Copse on lap 9.

On lap 10, the medium-tyre runners at the front continued to be threatened as Rainford got by Chilton and Moffat in one swoop, before Dan Rowbottom also passed Chilton for P6.

Dan Cammish also joined NAPA hard-charger Sutton in pushing through the field, pulling himself to P10 from P21 by lap 13.

In what has been his best season to date, Morgan was able to keep pushing and get past De Leon for P2 down the Wellington Straight on lap 14. Although setting his sights on Sutton proved to be too ambitious a task, yet another podium for CPRL will certainly be celebrated well.

Track limit penalties started to be handed out towards the end of the race, with Chris Smiley and Gordon Shedden penalised. Particularly, the penalty curtailed a promising climb into the reverse grid lottery positions for Smiley – from the back of the grid in Race 1.

Cammish pushed further over the next laps, climbing above a dropping Moffat to P7 as the field entered lap 21. Up at the front, it was a typically controlled, typically distanced drive from Sutton.

And at the flag, Sutton would cement his legacy-defining race with a sensational drive – one of a champion, if you will forgive the cliche.

Morgan and Rainford followed to complete the podium, with De Leon, Rowbottom, Cammish, Árón Taylor-Smith, Tom Ingram, Moffat, and Cook completing the top 10.

Chilton, Shedden, Lewis Selby, Dexter Patterson, and Nic Hamilton completed the points.
