Porsche has reportedly abandoned plans to run a second factory operation in Formula E for the upcoming Season 13, opting instead to support a newly formed, independent customer squad to maintain its six-car presence in the GEN4 era.
According to reports from FE Notebook, an unknown entity – provisionally designated “NewCo Formula E Team” – submitted a late application to the Formula E Commission on Thursday to field two Porsche 975 RSE cars.
A Porsche spokesperson confirmed the application was made in consultation with Porsche Motorsport, but clarified the shift in operating strategy.
“This is not a second Porsche factory team,” the spokesperson said.
“We have decided against fielding two additional cars as a factory operation. In doing so, motorsport is contributing to Porsche’s strategic realignment. As the applicant is an independent team, we cannot provide any further details.”
A change of plans at Porsche
The pivot marks a significant U-turn from Porsche’s initial announcement in November 2025, where the German manufacturer revealed plans to operate four works cars out of Weissach.
Doubts over the second factory outfit had circulated for months, intensified by comments from Mahindra driver Nyck de Vries in August claiming the second works team would not materialise.
If the FIA approves the registration process for “NewCo Formula E Team”, Porsche will still be represented by six 975 RSE cars on the Gen4 grid: two works entries, two customer cars operated by Cupra Kiro, and two run by the unconfirmed mystery entrant.
The identity of the team behind the late entry and its potential driver lineup remain unconfirmed, though the project keeps hopes alive for a full 24-car, 12-team Formula E grid for Season 13.
While a full 24-car grid is a massive win for the championship, quietly offloading a second factory effort to an undisclosed customer raises serious questions about whether budget pressures at Porsche are finally catching up with Porsche’s ambitious Gen4 expansion plans.
