Formula 1 has always been a competition between engineering organisations as much as drivers.
Today, much of that engineering depends on data moving between the circuit, factory systems, simulators and specialists working away from the pit wall.
That makes reliability a digital issue as well as a mechanical one. In 2025, the FIA confirmed that its driver categorisation platform had been briefly compromised after security researchers found weaknesses in the system. For teams and suppliers, protecting access to technical information is increasingly part of dependable operations.
More performance travels as data
Modern F1 teams use simulation and remote analysis to extend what can be achieved during a race weekend. Trackside engineers can draw on specialists based at factories or remote operations centres.
Our report on Cadillac’s expanding F1 technical infrastructure showed how the new team is investing in simulator technology at its Indiana headquarters to support engineering work, driver preparation and race-by-race setup. Infrastructure like this increases the number of systems, locations and people involved in performance decisions.
The security question extends beyond protecting a laptop in the garage. Teams need to know who can reach sensitive systems, from which devices and under what conditions.

Remote operations widen the perimeter
Travelling personnel may connect from hotels, airports, temporary workspaces or home networks. Each location introduces a network that the organisation may not manage directly.
For staff using networks they do not control, a VPN (Virtual Private Network) can encrypt traffic between the device and the VPN server. That protects data in transit from local network observers, while remote access still requires managed devices, approved applications, strong authentication and clear rules about which systems can be reached.
Third-party access deserves the same scrutiny. Suppliers supporting simulation, communications or specialist software should receive only the permissions required for their work, with access reviewed when contracts or projects change.
Credentials matter alongside telemetry
Highly valuable data is difficult to protect if an attacker can sign in using a legitimate account. Identity controls therefore matter across email, cloud services, engineering platforms and internal administration.
Multi-factor authentication can reduce the value of a stolen password. Privileged accounts should be limited to people who genuinely need them, while staff changes should trigger prompt access reviews. Logging administrative activity also gives security teams a clearer record when unusual behaviour requires investigation.
This matters in a sport where personnel move between teams and suppliers collaborate with several organisations.
AI adds another layer to the risk
AI is becoming more useful in engineering, simulation and data analysis, while the same technology is affecting the cyber threat environment.

The NCSC’s assessment of the evolving cyber threat says AI will almost certainly make parts of cyber intrusion more effective and efficient through 2027. It also identifies poor identity management, weak encryption and insecure data handling as factors that can increase exposure.
For motorsport organisations adopting new analytical tools, security reviews should consider where data is processed, who can access it and how new services connect to existing systems.
Race weekends need digital resilience
Security also includes the ability to keep working when a digital service fails. A race weekend leaves little time to diagnose access problems or rebuild credentials.
Backup procedures matter because availability is part of security. Teams need to know how critical work continues if a cloud service, authentication system or remote connection becomes unavailable.
Security becomes part of competitive reliability
F1’s dependence on data will continue to grow as simulation, remote engineering and connected analysis become more capable. That gives teams more ways to make decisions quickly, while increasing the number of digital relationships that must remain trusted.
Cyber security therefore belongs alongside reliability planning. Protecting accounts, controlling remote access, separating sensitive systems and preparing for failure helps ensure that valuable information is available to the right people when a race weekend demands it most.
