Mercedes has been the class of the field in the 2026 Formula 1 season so far, but it is wary of how its rivals can catch up in the second half of the campaign.
The Silver Arrows has been the dominant force so far this season, with eight victories in 11 wins, six coming from title-leader, Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
A superior package has given the German marque a buffer to rivals so far, but has reason to be wary, after some fleeting reliability issues that has seen both Antonelli and teammate George Russell suffer retirements.
Additionally, some impressive showings by Ferrari has left Lewis Hamilton second in the Drivers’ title, ahead of Russell, with McLaren also signalling a return to form in Hungary.
Mercedes’ overall success in the first half of the season has, however, been a welcome tonic, given its comparative lack of success across the ground-effect era from 2022 to 2025.
And speaking to its in-house Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show, its Deputy Technical Director, Simone Resta, clearly took pleasure from its return to form after “some difficult seasons”.
“When I look at the journey this team has been on, and considering I’ve now been part of it for almost two years, the progress has been remarkable,” he said.
“We’ve come through some difficult seasons. Last year we took an important step forward and this year we’ve taken another significant step. None of that was guaranteed.
“I tend to look at the positive side of things, and there is a lot to be pleased about. At the same time, we’re only halfway through the season and there is still a great deal left to achieve. The focus has to remain on one race at a time.
“We can’t become distracted by championship points or bigger picture conversations. We simply need to maximise every weekend, continue improving reliability, bring performance to the car and keep extracting everything possible from the package. There is still a long way to go.”
Mercedes braced for “more intense” second half of F1 season
F1 teams are, of course, forbidden to carry out any work on their cars during the summer break, leaving a sense of the status quo from the final race prior to it, to the first race after it.
But Resta is aware that the dynamic of a championship can often shift during this time, and is expectant of some “more intense” battles until the end of the season.
“History tells us that the championship always changes after the summer shutdown,” he continued.
“The pressure increases on the teams that are leading. But equally, it increases on the teams trying to catch up. The environment becomes more intense, and every result carries more weight. That’s when you really see the strength and resilience of an organisation.
“It’s where teams demonstrate whether they can handle the pressure and continue performing when the stakes become higher.
“I’m very interested to see that phase of the season unfold because it’s often where championships are ultimately won or lost.”
The Dutch Grand Prix next week heralds the return to F1, and Mercedes will be braced for a significant battle from both Ferrari and McLaren, as Antonelli will be looking to add to his points buffer.
