Opel Formula E has signed 2023 Formula 2 champion Theo Pourchaire as its first regular driver ahead of the 2026/27 Formula E World Championship.

The 22-year-old Frenchman joins the German brand as it prepares to enter the series for the championship’s GEN4 era.

Going full electric next season ⚡️

I’m so happy to be joining @Opel for season 13 of the @FIAFormulaE world championship !!
It’s going to be an all new but very exciting challenge for me, and I already can’t wait to be part of it. pic.twitter.com/iuPetllsYX

— Théo Pourchaire (@TPourchaire) August 4, 2026

Pourchaire brings a stellar racing resume to the squad. He earned titles in Formula 4 and Formula 2, alongside experience in IndyCar, the World Endurance Championship, and Formula 1 development roles.

Pourchaire has already showcased his pace in electric machinery, finishing P2 in this year’s Miami Rookie Free Practice session.

He has also been involved in the development of the new GEN4 machinery through the group-wide ‘Young Drivers Programme’.

The upcoming GEN4 car represents Formula E’s biggest performance leap yet.

Pourchaire ready for ‘biggest opportunity’ at Opel

Pourchaire sees the move to the newly formed works team as the defining step in his single-seater career.

“It feels great to be joining the Opel GSE Formula E Team and the Opel family – an iconic brand with a rich racing history which is now making a name for itself in the World Championship.

“It’s the next step in my career and the biggest single-seater opportunity I’ve had so far. The new GEN4 generation is a perfect fit for my transition from Formula 2: more power, all-wheel drive and incredible acceleration – that’s exactly the kind of car I love.

“I want to learn, continue developing further and I will give my all from day one to ensure Opel succeeds.”

Preparations underway for Saudi Arabia opener

Pourchaire has already begun simulator work and track testing with the Opel prototype alongside test and development driver Sophia Floersch.

Opel GSE Formula E Team Principal Joerg Schrott highlighted Pourchaire’s key assets for the brand’s debut season.

“We are delighted to officially welcome Théo to the Opel GSE Formula E Team. We have been watching him for a long time and are impressed by his performance, maturity and fresh approach.

“Théo belongs to a generation of racing drivers who’s technical understanding, speed, adaptability and work ethic are perfectly suited to the new GEN4 era of electric motorsport.

“Théo has consistently demonstrated in the junior categories that he can win races and secure titles. That is exactly the mindset we need in our cockpit.

“It was immediately clear how well he fits into our team, both professionally and personally. Théo gives very clear feedback, learns quickly, stays calm even in new situations and, at the same time, has the ambition to keep improving.

“What’s more, his fresh approach means he fits in very well with the Opel team. We’re convinced that Théo, with his personality, will be a very important part of our Formula E project.”

The team is currently working through an extensive testing plan ahead of Opel’s official Formula E debut.
