Aston Martin denies ‘make-or-break’ narrative behind crunch F1 upgrades

Aston Martin trackside chief Mike Krack quashed any notion that its hotly anticipated Formula 1 upgrades package at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix is a “make or break” moment for the team.

The Silverstone-based squad has brought a set of upgrades to the AMR26 for this weekend’s race at the Hungaroring, preferring to introduce them in their entirety, as opposed to drip-feeding them onto the car like its rivals.

Aston’s 2026 season has undeniably been an immensely tough one so far, with just one point scored and the car being hugely exposed on much of the circuits, partly due to its Honda power unit that is several horsepower of other manufacturers.

Prior to this weekend, Krack revealed at Spa-Francorchamps last week that the team was likely to have a parts shortage when it comes to the upgrades, rendering a likelihood of reverting back to the ‘A spec’ car if necessary.

And speaking ahead of this weekend’s race, Krack acknowledged the difficulty of testing such parts on a Grand Prix weekend, and lowered expectations of an immediate improvement when the car takes to the track in free practice tomorrow.

“You know, when you bring substantial upgrades, it’s something that the track team will have to learn as quick as possible,” he said.

“We have no winter testing where you can just do some runs, some back to backs and all that, so it puts obviously a lot of emphasis on the quality of your data, on the quality of understanding your simulations. But we do not expect that we get everything out of it in the first run tomorrow, so I think we need to learn how to manage this and how to get the best out of it.

“And we have a good track team, we have a good support team from all that will go through that quickly and we will get the right conclusions quickly, but it will take a bit of time.

“So I think the tests that we will have to do, the basic tests, be right ideas, you know, brakes and these kind of things will come over the next years.”

Aston Martin ‘realistic’ ahead of upgrades’ first race

Hungary is the first of a two-step process that Aston Martin hopes will see performances change for the better, with this weekend’s upgrades accompanied by a mooted engine equivalent from Honda at the next round in the Netherlands.

Asked if there is a sense of pressure on the team on what appears to be a make-or-break weekend, Krack released the pressure, denying that such a level of vitality to the race exists.

“No, it will not be a make-or-break,” he said. “I think we are all realistic. We have a plan and we work with that plan.

“Success and setbacks are part of sport. I think we have been in a difficult situation or difficult sport before and we try to get out of it, but there are more steps needed.

“This is part of the development strategy, so I would not call it a make or break. It is just the development that needs to continue.

“We will have this recreation for a couple of years coming and it is just one step.”

Aston will be keeping its fingers crossed that this is the first step towards a sufficient platform to build on for the remainder of the regulations cycle and kickstart a mini-comeback ahead of the F1 summer break.
