After reports in Italy claiming that Lewis Hamilton is planning to activate his option to remain with the team for another Formula 1 season, Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur has said he will ‘discuss with him, not everybody’ about his extension.
After a difficult first season with Ferrari in 2025 and only managing a sprint win in China, Hamilton is now a Ferrari winner after his win out in Barcelona mid-June.
Including his win, the Brit now has five podiums with the Italian-based team, after a nightmarish first season in which he failed to score a top-three finish for the first time in his career.
It is believed that his contract covered the 2025 and 2026 season with an option to extend for a year into 2027, but rumours have claimed this option only exists on
Hamilton’s side.
Fresh reports last week have suggested that the Stevenage-born driver is close to activating his option to remain with Ferrari and guarantee his seat at Ferrari beyond the 2026 season.
Speaking to Motorsport Week and other media outlets ahead of last weekend’s British Grand Prix, the Ferrari Team Principal, when asked if talks about a new
contract have started with the seven-time World Champion, responded: “Who spoke about the extension? I will discuss with him for the extension, not everybody.

“He is still under contract with us and now is not the time to discuss about an extension.”
These discussions come after Hamilton claimed earlier this year that he plans to remain in F1 for the foreseeable future, commenting at the Canadian Grand Prix: “I still love what I do with all my heart and I’m going to be here for quite some time, so get used to it.”
If Hamilton remains with Ferrari for 2027, it will mark his 20th year since his debut back in 2007 with McLaren, a season in which he just fell short of winning the championship, before going on to win the first of his seven titles a year later.
