Ugo Ugochukwu sailed to victory around Silverstone for the Formula 3 Sprint Race at the historic British Grand Prix.

The American drove a clinical race to secure victory ahead of his rivals, with Yevan David and Theophile Nael closely rounding out the podium after enduring several intense battles throughout the 18-lap race.

Following Friday’s qualifying session, the top 12were reversed. Starting in the front row were championship leader Ugochukwu and AIX rookie David. The Campos Racing driver will be looking to limit damage ahead of tomorrow’s full-length feature race. Meanwhile, David looked to secure his maiden F3 podium and best result in Silverstone.

Time to get those lids on, boys 😁

Lights out for the F3 Sprint

As the lights went out for the first time this weekend, it was Ugochukwu who got a good start, immediately claiming the lead of the race before the field got to Turn 1. However, his rookie rival David was already applying pressure to take the race lead. The pair shared an intense battle throughout the opening lap, but there were no changes in the top three as they crossed the line for Lap 2.

Theophile Nael had a brilliant start, moving his Campos car from 11th to eighth in a matter of corners, as the field made it through the opening two laps cleanly. A rare occasion in the series, but also a testament to the talent of the drivers in this field.

Further down in the field, tomorrow’s pole sitter Freddie Slater shapes a move over Ernesto Riveria for 11th place. However, he was unable to get past, forcing him to stay in the DRS of his Red Bull rival.

But out front, David was not letting the Championship leader run away with the race, remaining within a second of his rival, consistently pressuring his rival to make a mistake.

A battle for the final podium place unfolded early in the race. Alessandro Giusti was under pressure from PREMA’s James Wharton, who aimed to secure his second podium finish of the season. The Australian pressured his French rival from the opening lap; however, Giusti was able to defend his place.

On Lap 7, Slater reignited his attempt for 11th place. Riveria and Slater were millimetres apart from each other when the Audi-backed driver bailed out of a move, narrowly avoiding a collision with each other.

The following lap saw Wharton sail past Giusti on Lap 8, moving himself up onto the podium places. The Frenchman’s form continued to dip following the overtake, as he found himself in sixth by the end of Lap 9.

Back at the front of the field, Ugochukwu found himself a 3 second gap, with Nael’s charge through the field continuing through to Lap 10, as the Frenchman made his way into seventh, immediately pressuring Giusti in sixth.

The Campos driver was able to sail past his fellow Countryman on the same lap, as Giusti fell to ninth place.

Final 10 laps

With less than 10 laps remaining, the field became extremely close, consistently trading places. TRIDENT’s Noah Stromsted got his way past the Australian Wharton for third place, pulling off a breathtaking move into Maggotts and Becketts for the last place on the podium.

David was next on Stromsted’s list of overtakes, as the Danish driver was within three tenths of his rival ahead.

TRIDENT showed a strong pace in the Sprint, having both drivers within the top five. However, on Lap 13, the pair made contact with one another as they challenged David for the third place spot.

Whilst the contact was minimal, it invited a fast-charging Nael into the battle for the podium places. Also, the intense teammate battle allowed David to pull away and create a 1.2-second gap to his rivals. But Matteo De Palo and TRIDENT’s pace was no match for Nael, who continued his charge.

Lap 15 saw the battle for second continue as Stromsted found the pace to be within four tenths of David ahead. But three tenths behind him was Nael, who created an intense DRS train down to 10th place.

Several drivers were shaping overtakes all in hopes of a podium place at Silverstone. Slater was a big mover in the final few laps, making his way into eighth place, making it a three points paying finish for TRIDENT.

Stromsted attempts yet another move on David; however, he doesn’t get past his rival. Inviting his teammate to get past him for third place on the penultimate lap.

At the front, however, there was no such drama. Ugochukwu had been in a class of his own, stretching his advantage to almost 20 seconds over the rest of the field to seal a commanding victory.

Final podium place fight

On the final lap, Nael made his move as Stromsted locked up, allowing the Frenchman to sweep past and demote the Dane to fifth. With one podium position still up for grabs, Naël immediately set his sights on De Palo, piling on the pressure through the final sequence of corners.

The trio ran three wide into the final corners. Each refused to yield as they fought for the final step on the podium. In a breathtaking drag race to the line, Nael emerged ahead to snatch third place spectacularly, completing one of the most dramatic finishes of the Formula 3 season.

Ugochukwu sailed home with a 20-second gap to his closest rival, but behind the race winner, there was another piece of history to celebrate. David crossed the line in second, becoming the first Sri Lankan driver to stand on the Formula 3 podium—a landmark achievement in his motorsport career.

Nael ultimately secured the final podium place after a brilliant race through the field.

After a race packed with overtakes, strategy, safety cars and a stunning final-lap showdown, Silverstone delivered one of the most unforgettable Formula 3 contests of the year.
