Lando Norris has bemoaned his flailing title defence ahead of the Formula 1 Barcelona Catalunya Grand Prix, labelling it “impossible.”
Norris and McLaren’s defence of their 2025 titles has been far from ideal for the champions, with poor reliability and competitiveness hindering the MCL40.
Having won in Monaco last season, the Briton retired during this year’s race due to car issue, his second consecutive DNF after Canada dampening his championship aspirations further.
His recent run of poor reliability has opened up his points deficit to championship leader Kimi Antonelli to a staggering 98 points.
But Norris revealed that he is at peace with the challenges he has faced so far this year.
“I think I’m dealing [with it] okay, to be honest,” he said to media on Thursday in Barcelona, including to Motorsport Week.
“It hurts, of course, because I know I’m not still fighting for wins, and we’re not fighting for podiums and things like that at the moment, but I was still optimistic at the very early part of the season, if we started not so strong, that the season is long and we can come from a points deficit through the middle of the year to the end of the year, and hopefully finish strong and be able to fight.”
Lando Norris calls “title defence pretty impossible”
Norris then highlighted the knock-on effects of the issues seen with the MCL40, citing an inability to build confidence in the car a a primary problem.
“But when you keep having not even an amazing weekend, but when you have things that keep going wrong, you cannot build confidence in the car, you cannot try things,” he said.
“All of this is making any title defence pretty impossible for the time being. So, it hurts me, but it also hurts the whole team.
“None of us wants to not finish races. We all want to give ourselves another chance to defend the constructors’ and to defend the drivers’, but for the time being, it’s just impossible.
“So, we just have to keep working hard. It hurts, but that’s just racing sometimes.”
Challenging title defences are not new in F1. Such years test a driver’s resolve and ability to push through adversity. 2026 will likely make Norris a stronger driver, with his sole focus help guide the team out of its car issues.
