Max Verstappen has broken his silence ahead of the Formula 1 Barcelona Catalunya Grand Prix over the signed-off 2027 power unit changes and decision to award Mercedes AUDO.

Talks to change F1’s power units to a 60:40 split in favour of internal combustion were signed off this week, changes which Verstappen kept close tabs on.

One of the leading voices against the new rules, he branded the original regulations as “Formula E on steroids” during pre-season testing, a stance that has not softened.

But speaking on Media Day in Barcelona, the four-time world champion conveyed his approval for the changes due to come into effect next season, with further planned for 2028.

“Of course I would have hoped next year would be what we get already in 2028, he said to media, including Motorsport Week.

“But I also understand that there are politics involved in that.”

“At least the changes they are making are heading into the right direction. So that’s a good thing.”

Outcome of meetings: “If there is anything new about what I’m doing, I will let you know.”

Max Verstappen “confused” by AUDO decision

Red Bull was said to be left “stunned” by the decision to award Mercedes Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities [ADUO] to its power unit, given its dominance.

Verstappen also took the opportunity on Thursday to clarify his view on the decision, which sees Red Bull unable to upgrade its own power unit.

“We just feel surprised, because we don’t feel like we are the best,” Verstappen said.

“It is super impressive what they [Red Bull Powertrains] have done. If you look at it, we never thought we’d start there and it’s super impressive that in such a short timeframe what they have done.

“We still have some reliability things but overall it’s honestly nice to be a part of it and seeing the drive of it. They are never satisfied and they are equally disappointed when things don’t go right.

“Of course we are proud, just a bit confused as suddenly being portrayed as the best, because we don’t feel like that.”

Verstappen’s confusion at the decision to award ADUO to Mercedes will resonate with many in the paddock.

Further clarity is needed to understand Mercedes’ award, given its dominance in 2026.
