Arrow McLaren has announced that Ryan Hunter-Reay is slotting into the team’s sporting director role.
The 2014 Indianapolis 500 winner has been a part of the team as a consultant and part-time driver, recently contesting the 110th Indy 500 behind the wheel of the #31.
Hunter-Reay will now officially take over the sporting director position, and is tasked with ‘maximizing on-track performance while contributing to the team’s commercial success.’
The 45-year-old admitted he has largely been serving in this role for much of the season, but now has his duties formalized.
“I am incredibly honored and excited to join Arrow McLaren as Sporting Director,” said Hunter-Reay.
“After 23 years competing at the highest level of American open wheel racing, I’m eager to bring my experience, passion and insight to contribute pushing this ambitious team forward, and I’d like to thank Zak [Brown], Tony Kanaan and Arrow McLaren board members for this opportunity.
“Arrow McLaren has shown tremendous potential and possesses all the ingredients necessary to continue fighting for championships and Indy 500 wins as well as the coveted Triple Crown that McLaren Racing is aiming to achieve once again.
“Together with the talented drivers, engineers and crew, I will work relentlessly to help elevate our performance and deliver the results this iconic team, its fans and partners deserve.”
Hunter-Reay’s success as a driver is part of the reason Arrow McLaren values his input.
Much like Tony Kanaan, the team is building out its senior leadership with more and more veteran racers in an effort to keep focus where it needs to be going forward.
A decision has not yet been made if Hunter-Reay will continue to contest the Indy 500 in future years, or if he will end his driving duties with 18 starts in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
