Four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel has revealed his London Marathon debut exceeded his self-imposed “ambitious” targets.

The former Red Bull and Ferrari driver had entered himself into the 26-mile-long London Marathon, on Monday.

This was the German racing driver’s first foray into the event, and he impressed many – and by his own admission surpassed his self-imposed target.

Vettel took the ‘chequered flag’ just under three hours – posting 2:59:08. This he says was under his own “ambitious” three-hour cut-off.

“It felt very long, but it was my first time, so I didn’t know what to expect,” he told BBC Sport.

“But it’s been amazing how many people there were next to the course, and how happy everyone is, so it’s a really great experience.

“I set myself an ambitious goal, which I managed to achieve. I wanted to be just below three hours, which I did, so I’m very happy with that.

“But even more so happy that I finished, and having lived the experience, I can only recommend for people to sign up and try to do it.”

Vettel was joined by F1 presenter Tom Clarkson who added another hour to his total time.

The event was won by Kenyan athlete Sabastian Sawe, who made history with the first-ever sub-two hour runtime with a stellar time of one hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds.
