Max Verstappen has suffered further misfortune at the Nurburgring, after being handed a three-place grid penalty for the first of its qualifying races for the anticipated 24 Hour event.

The Dutchman had opted to partake in the qualifying round for the race with Formula 1 currently on its enforced five-week break, jumping back behind the wheel of a Red Bull-liveried Mercedes AMG GT3, alongside Lucas Auer.

Upon the resumption of action after a red flag, the car’s placing on the grid was put into jeopardy after Auer was seen making contact with the #941 Porsche, punting it into the wall.

The incident resulted in a visit to the stewards, which resulted in a three-place grid penalty for the first four-hour qualifying race, which commences at 16:30 GMT.
