Reigning Formula Regional European Champion Freddie Slater has officially joined the Audi Formula 1 Driver Development Programme for the 2026 season.
As the German marque looks ahead to its maiden F1 season, Slater becomes their first development driver in this new era.
At just 17 years old, the Briton has already achieved some of Motorsports’ most coveted titles across the ‘feeder series’, namely achieving titles in the UAE and Italian Formula 4, and last year, Slater claimed the FRECA title amongst a competitive grid.
In 2026, Slater will compete in his first full F3 season with TRIDENT Racing. The team responsible for the last three F3 champions, including Audi F1 driver Gabriel Bortoleto.
The partnership strengthens Slater’s challenge for a full-time F1 seat and gives him the much-needed extra backing that junior drivers often lack.
Slater on his progress on the road to F1 with Audi
When reflecting on this milestone, Slater emphasised his excitement to be joining Audi. The Briton claimed it to be an ‘honour’ to have them a part of his racing career moving forward.
“It’s an incredible honour to be the first driver selected for the Audi Driver Development Programme,” Slater explained.
“Audi is a brand with a legendary motorsport history. And to have their trust and support at this crucial stage of my career is a dream come true.”
Importantly, the 17-year-old highlighted that he remains focused on this year’s championship challenge. Slater hopes that joining the likes of TRIDENT and Audi will help him progress to F1.
“Joining forces with a respected team like Trident Motorsport for Formula 3 and having the backing of Audi Revolut F1 Team is a massive opportunity. I am fully focused on working hard and making the most of this pivotal step towards my goal of reaching Formula One.”
Meanwhile, Audi’s director of the development programme, Allan McNish sung the praises of Slater, emphasising that he was an ideal target to start their campaign in junior categories.

“In Freddie, we see the immense potential of a future star,” McNish said.
“His track record is remarkable. But more importantly, he possesses the focus, determination, and willingness to learn that are essential for reaching the pinnacle of our sport.
He is the ideal candidate to be the first signing of the Audi Driver Development Programme.
And we are committed to providing him with the tools, mentorship, and support he needs to succeed as he steps up to F3 with Trident Motorsport.
This is the first step in building our future on and off the track.”
