Audi has issued a major update in the development of its 2026 Formula 1 car, one that Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley has described as a “critical milestone”.

The German marque will make its debut in the sport this year, its first involvement in Grand Prix racing since the ‘Auto Union’ days of the 1930s, having transitioned over from Sauber.

With important experience earned in both its successful Dakar Rally and Formula E ventures, the further-electrified cars in the new rule cycle plays very much into the brand’s raison d’être.

And it has now taken that extra step by firing up the 50-50 hybrid engine that will power its R26 challenger in the 24-race championship, which it confirms it did on December 19.

“A fire-up is always a special moment, but this one marks a new beginning,” Head of the Audi F1 Project, Mattia Binotto, said.

“It is the tangible result of our collective ambition and the dedicated work of our teams in Neuburg and Hinwil.

“Seeing everything come together for the first time gives the entire project incredible energy. We have built a solid foundation for what will be a long journey, defined by our relentless drive to improve.”

Wheatley, who, like Binotto, shuffled over from Sauber as part of its long-term plans, will lead the team, having come off the back of a mid-season rejuvenation for the then-Swiss squad last year.

And the former Red Bull Sporting Director added that the development is ‘energising’ the team’s personnel, which will stretch across Neuburg, Hinwil and its new facility in Bicester Motion.

“This successful fire-up is a critical milestone that validates the quality of the work and collaboration across all departments,” Wheatley said.

“It energises the entire team and provides a clear focus as we prepare for the next phases of development, including the moment we first bring the car to track.

“This achievement brings our first race in Melbourne into sharp focus, and we will build on this foundation as one united team.”

The team has retained its 2025 roster of Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto, who will take to the wheel of the R26 for the first time in the behind-closed-doors pre-season test in Barcelona later this month.
