My moment of the 2025 Formula 1 season has to be the post-race announcement that both the McLarens had been disqualified in Las Vegas.
It not only showed just how fragile the concept of success is in a sport like F1, but also set up a grandstand finish to the season.
In fact, in hindsight, it pretty aptly summarised how the competitive landscape had shifted since the summer break and how much Max Verstappen had pushed McLaren and Lando Norris – in that race, exacerbating its plank wear, and during the season as a whole.
Discussions about Verstappen’s antics on the formation lap prompting Norris to be more aggressive in the race, the radio back-and-forth on the McLaren pit wall towards the end of the race when the team asked Norris to back off, it all just showed the effect Verstappen’s relentless, absolutely resurgent run was having on a season, that just after, ironically, the Dutch Grand Prix, seemed like a cut and dry McLaren double-championship-winning year.
