Aston Martin is targeting F1 championship glory

Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll has detailed the “monumental factors” behind his “relentless” pursuit to turn the team into Formula 1 champions.

The Silverstone-based squad has been under the stewardship of Stroll since 2018, with the team rebranding itself into its current avatar in 2021.

Despite enjoying a run of strong results in 2023, which saw the team bag eight podiums across the season with Fernando Alonso, the British marque is yet to mount a serious title challenge.

That said, with the 2026 regulations reset right around the horizon, Stroll has invested heavily in terms of infrastructure and key hires to ensure his team has the best chance.

“When I took over this team, it’s about six years ago now, I said it would be a 10-year journey to winning an F1 World Championship,” he said.

“We’re now witnessing the premises that we’ve built in order to provide the tools.

“There’s no other factory like this in any other F1 team. There’s no other wind tunnel like it. There’s no other driver simulator like it.”

The Canadian business mogul outlined the various areas that he has invested in in a bid to prepare the team for the regulations reset.

Stroll labels Adrian Newey’s hire as Managing Technical Partner, however, as the most “monumental” of the lot.

“Obviously, getting Adrian to join was monumental. He’s been with us since the beginning of March, Andy Cowell, our CEO, Enrico [Cardile], our technical director, plus about 950 other people,” he explained.

“The whole team is forming into place and we’re looking forward to next year to a huge rules and regulations change.”

Stroll was also able to strike a deal with Honda for a works power unit deal from next year onwards.

The Japanese automobile giant has been instrumental in Red Bull’s championship run since 2021, and Stroll expects similar returns.

“Another huge step, we have Honda being our power unit partner, being a works team for the first time in our life,” he added.

“It’s a whole different experience, designing an engine that’s mated together with a power unit as one, rather than being a customer and just delivered an engine.

“So a tremendous amount of excitement is happening. I’m relentless. I don’t give up until the mission is completed. In this case, the mission is being world champions.”
