Lando Norris appeared to take a less-than-subtle dig at Formula 1 pundit Jolyon Palmer over comments made about the “luck” he has had during this season.
The Briton will start second for Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix, behind pole sitter and team-mate Oscar Piastri, after a closely-fought qualifying session on Saturday.
Norris and Piastri will head into the race with a slender nine-point difference in the World Championship fight, in the Australian’s favour.
The pair have closely duelled over the 14 races contested so far, with Piastri’s early lead shortened through victories. Norris has taken at Monaco, Silverstone and Budapest.
During F1’s summer break, Palmer claimed on the F1 Nation podcast that Piastri’s title lead could be as big as 61 points, “but for largely a bit of luck.”
When Palmer interviewed Norris in parc ferme immediately after qualifying on Saturday, Norris couldn’t help but provide a small aside in the ex-Renault driver’s direction.
“No,” he said when asked if he felt he had executed a good lap on his final run, adding, with a smile: “I mean, with the wind like this, a lot of it’s down to luck as well, you know – even with all the luck I’ve been having.”
Norris had previously discussed luck earlier in the weekend, discussing possible regret at on-track decisions made in the season.
“Sometimes it goes your way and you get lucky, sometimes it doesn’t and you don’t make the best decisions,” he told media including Motorsport Week.
“But those are also the times you learn the most and help yourself more for the future.
“So, no – I live my life not by regretting what I’ve done, more trying to learn and improving from it.”
