Lando Norris went fastest in the final practice session before qualifying for the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver’s 1:11.799s was enough to see him go quickest, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc second, just seven hundredths of a second behind.

Leclerc was eager to bounce back from his crash in FP1 on Friday, which ruled him out of FP2. The Ferrari set a number of laps in order to make up for the lack of track time the day before.

George Russell was third, with Lewis Hamilton in fourth, in what appeared to be a significant boost for Ferrari’s chances, after a difficult first two sessions.

Max Verstappen was fifth, with Fernando Alonso sixth, Andrea Kimi Antonelli seventh, and Oscar Piastri went eighth, the Australian suffering a puncture midway through the session, after clipping the infamous ‘Wall of Champions’.

Carlos Sainz continued Williams’ presence near the top of the pack with ninth, with its second car of Alex Albon’s in 10th.

Nico Hulkenberg was one of three drivers who fell foul of the ‘Wall of Champions’

Isack Hadjar was 11th, with Pierre Gasly 12th, Liam Lawson 13th, Lance Stroll 14th and Oliver Bearman 15th, the Haas driver also suffering damage through contact with the same wall.

Team-mate Esteban Ocon was 16th, with Franco Colapinto 17th. Nico Hulkenberg was 18th, another victim of the wall, having spun into it which briefly brought out the red flags.

Gabriel Bortoleto was 19th, with Yuki Tsunoda propping up the field in 20th place.

For Norris, it will be a big boost ahead of qualifying, having described his and his team’s Friday running as “our worst” of the season so far.

Leclerc will be hoping the early afternoon’s laps will be a sign of things to come in qualifying, with Hamilton questioning the likelihood of reaching Q3 after his disappointing day’s work on Friday.

It will be a positive afternoon for Russell also, who showed more pace despite the rising temperatures, one of the crucial factors in Mercedes’ performance.
