Lance Stroll is to miss the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix through medical advice, after experiencing long-term pain in his hand and wrist, Aston Martin has confirmed.
In a statement, the Silverstone-based squad said: “Over the course of the past six weeks Lance has been experiencing pain in his hand and wrist, which his medical consultant believes is in relation to the procedure he underwent in 2023.
“As a result his medical team have confirmed that he will not race tomorrow and he will undergo a procedure to rectify these issues before focusing on his recovery.”
Stroll fractured both wrists in a cycling accident just over two weeks before the start of the 2023 season, but managed to enter the opening round in Bahrain.
With qualifying having already been completed, Aston Martin cannot call up a replacement, therefore team-mate Fernando Alonso will be the team’s sole entrant, the Spaniard qualifying 10th for his home race.
If Stroll’s procedure required a period of time without racing, the team’s reserve driver Felipe Drugovich would be the most likely candidate to replace the Canadian.
Stroll, who made it into Q2 on Saturday, qualified 14th, but was placed under investigation having allegedly failed to be weight immediately after the session’s conclusion.
