Cadillac reveals milestone moment with F1 power unit venture

Cadillac F1 Team 2025

The hard work is already underway for Cadillac

The nascent Cadillac Formula 1 team has revealed that its own in-house engine – due to debut in 2029 – is already in development and has already been “fired up.”

The American outfit will make its F1 debut next season, and in anticipation of its entry, the team held a glitzy launch party at the Miami Grand Prix last week.

It will utilise Ferrari power units in its infancy, with plans to run off its own power by the end of the decade.

However, it appears that focus is already going into its own engines already, with a significant update from General Motors president Mark Reuss.

At the launch in Miami, Reuss started that its PU division is already hard at work in producing the engine that still has three years to be perfected.

“With regard to the power unit, development is already well underway,” he told assembled media. “In fact, we fired up our first engine last week.”

The progress already made is good news for Cadillac’s team principal Graeme Lowdon

Wind tunnel work and personnel hires add to excitement of Cadillac project

Cadillac has quite simply impressed with such early development, particularly as its own PU facility is yet to be completed, but the hard word hasn’t stopped there.

With some established F1 teams already beginning tentative work on developing their own cars for 2026, Cadillac representatives said in Miami that the challenger that will contest the championship is well on the way.

“We are working on the cars. We have been in the wind tunnel for a long time,” they said. “The chassis has arrived, we continue to add people to the team.

“There are so many work streams that are all happening at the same time.”

Whilst the boffins back at base in Silverstone are readying the machinery that will occupy the grid, the team as a whole will now be seeking to find the drivers it will pick for the task.

It was noted that Mick Schumacher was at the launch in Miami, with Sergio Perez also said to be on its radar.

Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou are also thought to be in the conversations, the latter potentially having an advantage due to his links to Ferrari.
