The Qatar Grand Prix is one of the most thrilling events on the Formula 1 calendar.

With its high-speed track and challenging night-time conditions, it offers fans an unforgettable experience. The race at Lusail International Circuit is known for its intense competition and strategic challenges, making it a must-visit for all F1 enthusiasts.

Are you planning to visit this race? Here’s everything you need to know.

Where is the Lusail International Circuit?

Lusail International Circuit was initially built for MotoGP but was later modified to accommodate Formula 1. It features a mix of fast straights and technical turns, making it one of the more challenging tracks for drivers. However, getting to the track as a visitor is easy.

The circuit is situated just 22 kilometers north of Doha, the capital of Qatar. Due to this short distance, attendees can conveniently stay in Doha while accessing the track through taxis, ride-sharing apps, or shuttle buses, which operate on race days.

The drive from Doha to Lusail takes approximately 30 minutes, though traffic congestion can extend travel times significantly, especially on race day.

During the race weekend, organisers implement additional transport infrastructure such as designated parking zones and pedestrian paths. For those relying on public transportation, shuttle services are expanded during race week.

Government-operated shuttle buses run between Lusail QNB Metro Station and the circuit, helping fans complete the final leg of the journey after arriving via the Doha Metro Red Line.

Where to stay – Doha or near the track?

Visitors can either stay in Doha, where most luxury hotels and entertainment options are available, or closer to the Lusail International Circuit for easy access on race day.

Qatar is one of the few grand prix that are held at night
  • Doha: The city offers an extensive range of hotels, fine dining, and nightlife, making it the preferred choice for visitors who want to combine Formula 1 with a broader travel experience.  You can find race-weekend packages, including premium hotels and exclusive shuttle services to the circuit. Some of the best accommodations include The Ritz-Carlton, voted third best hotel in the world by readers of Travel and Leisure in 2024.
  • Lusail: Though not as developed as Doha in terms of hotel variety, Lusail Marina District has growing accommodation options. Serviced apartments and high-end hotels are now available, for example in the spectacular Katara Towers, offering a more convenient but quieter experience closer to the track.

If you prefer an active, engaging visit with access to shopping malls, museums, and entertainment, staying in Doha is the best option. However, if avoiding long commutes on race day is a priority, Lusail provides a practical alternative.

Best grandstands for viewing the race

The Qatar GP offers a variety of grandstands, each with unique vantage points to enjoy the race action. Picking the right grandstand is important to get the best of what the Lusail International Circuit has to offer.

  • North Grandstand: This location provides a good view of the longest straight and Turn 1, which is one of the most dramatic overtaking points on the track. This grandstand is ideal for fans who want to witness intense braking maneuvers and side-by-side racing.
  • Turn 16 Grandstand: Positioned at the circuit’s final corner before the main straight, this grandstand allows spectators to see how drivers navigate the last section of the track before pushing to full speed. It also offers a clear view of the pit entry, allowing fans to follow team strategies in real-time – an important element that often determines the outcome of a Formula 1 race.

For those wanting a more luxurious stay, VIP hospitality packages from different providers offer premium seating with exclusive lounge access. Many packages include gourmet dining, air-conditioned lounges, and prime trackside views, ensuring a comfortable race experience.

Qatar GP time – Schedule and what to expect

The Qatar GP is one of the few races that take place at night, as the race starts at 19h00 local time (UTC+3). Held under floodlights, it creates a visually stunning spectacle, and is something every F1 fan should attend at least once.

In recent years, the Qatar GP has also featured the Sprint weekend format, which adjusts the standard F1 schedule:

  • Friday: One free practice session and Sprint qualifying
  • Saturday: Sprint race followed by traditional qualifying
  • Sunday: Grand Prix

This structure means that there is a Sprint race on the first session on Saturday, instead of a free practice as in a traditional race weekend.

If you get to the arena during daytime to enjoy the fan zones or the entertainment, heat can be a factor. Staying hydrated and dressing appropriately is important. Arriving early is also recommended to avoid delays at security checks or transport hubs. Night time is usually cooler, so bring a light jacket to the race.

Ticket prices and best ways to buy Qatar GP tickets

One of the most appealing aspects of the Qatar GP is its affordability compared to other high-profile Formula 1 races. The average cost for a regular grandstand ticket in past years has been around $330, making it significantly cheaper than races like Monaco or Singapore.

There are several categories of Qatar GP tickets available:

  • General Admission: Offers access to open areas around the circuit, starting from approximately $200. A good choice for budget-conscious fans.
  • Grandstand Tickets: These are the most popular and start around $330, offering reserved seating and better views of the action.
  • Hospitality Packages: Prices for VIP experiences can range from $1,000 to over $5,000, depending on the level of service and access provided. These packages often include premium seating, gourmet meals, and pit lane tours.

The best way to purchase tickets is through the official Lusail International Circuit website, or through authorised Formula 1 ticketing partners. It is highly recommended to book early, as the more popular grandstands tend to sell out quickly.

Always double-check the authenticity of the platform you’re buying from, as third-party resellers may charge inflated prices or offer invalid tickets.

What to bring and what to expect at the circuit

Attending the Qatar GP at Lusail International Circuit is an exciting experience, but it’s important to come prepared to make the most of the race weekend. Given the desert environment being equipped with the right essentials can make a huge difference.

The 2025 race will take place in the evening, but it can still be hot. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing that respects local customs – Qatar is a traditional country, so avoid overly revealing clothing. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as the circuit grounds are extensive.

Don’t forget items like sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for daytime events. A portable phone charger can help you stay connected and capture the best moments. Ear protection is highly recommended – Formula 1 cars are loud, and children especially will need to protect their ears.

Security checks at the circuit are thorough. Prohibited items include outside food and drink, professional camera equipment, and any object that could be considered dangerous. Always review the official guidelines ahead of your visit.

Finally, while there are plenty of food and beverage stalls inside, expect premium pricing.

Things to do in Qatar during the F1 weekend

While the Qatar GP is the main event, there’s no shortage of other things to experience in this culturally rich and rapidly developing country. Whether you’re visiting for a few days or making a longer trip of it, Qatar offers a compelling mix of history, luxury, and adventure.

Start with a visit to the Museum of Islamic Art, one of Doha’s most iconic landmarks, featuring collections that span 1,400 years of Islamic history. Another must-see is the National Museum of Qatar, which showcases the country’s cultural evolution through interactive exhibits and stunning architecture.

For a more modern outing, head to The Pearl-Qatar, a luxurious island development filled with high-end shops, marina promenades, and international restaurants. It’s a perfect spot for pre-race eating or evening relaxation.

Adventure seekers should not miss a desert safari, where guided tours take visitors across the Qatari desert – a thrilling way to break up the racing weekend.

One thing that tends to attract F1 fans, due to their fascination for thrill and excitement, is gambling. This can be seen during race weekends such as those in Monaco and Las Vegas, two of the most popular races to visit on the calendar, where the casinos of the cities attract many visitors.

In Qatar, there are no physical casinos, due to legal restrictions. However, this might be about to change. In the United Arab Emirates, close to Qatar and a prominent figure in the region, gambling regulations have been relaxed.

The new pit and VIP fan complex at Qatar is world class

This is most clearly evident in the establishment of the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA). The establishment means the country is working on a new framework for gambling licenses, which will open the door for online casino operators to establish themselves in the country.

In the more distant future, the UAE is also constructing the first physical casino in the country. The construction of the large casino resort Wynn Al Marjan Island is expected to open in 2027 and is set to be even bigger than the original Wynn in Las Vegas.

The changes in the UAE gambling market are being noticed across the region and could influence neighboring countries such as Qatar to follow suit, if the results prove successful. One of the effects and goals of opening up casino entertainment is to increase tourism, which could positively impact the experience of visiting future GPs in these countries.

While visitors of the Qatar GP are not yet able to enjoy the physical casino experience, it can be found online. Many visitors explore Qataris no.1 online casino site, accessible for international guests. At online casinos, you can find all the entertainment from land-based casinos, and most often even more, which can increase the drama of the trip.

Final tips for enjoying the Qatar GP

To get the most out of your Qatar GP experience, preparation is key. While the racing action is the highlight, small details can make your trip smoother and more enjoyable. First, make sure to plan your arrival well in advance. Remember that traffic near Lusail International Circuit can get congested, especially on race day.

It’s also a good idea to familiarise yourself with local customs and etiquette. Qatar welcomes tourists warmly, but both men and women should ensure they dress respectfully and modestly. Avoiding public displays of affection is also recommended.

Keep an eye on weather forecasts. Evenings can be cooler than expected, especially in desert conditions.

Lastly, download any official race apps or maps provided by the circuit. Formula 1 Official App is a good place to start. These tools offer live updates, venue layouts, and access to exclusive content, making your visit more interactive and informed.

With its rare blend of thrilling night racing, top-class facilities, and cultural experiences, the Qatar Grand Prix continues to grow as a highlight on the Formula 1 calendar, an experience that stays with you long after the chequered flag has come down.
