The streets of Washington D.C. were closed to the public on Sunday so IndyCar could run a special 147-lap event among the most historic district in the country.
Kyle Kirkwood took the lead on the opening lap, and never looked back. The Floridian headed up an Andretti 1-3-4 and closed the gap to Palou to 91 points in the championship race.
Alex Palou’s day was riddled with errors on and off pit road, which meant the championship leader finished in 20th and a large chunk of his points advantage to Kirkwood evaporated.

There were a couple incidents that broke up the early portion of the race, with David Malukas the first to retire when he smashed into the concrete barriers following an unforced error.
Marcus Armstrong caused one of the other incidents when he blew the braking zone and barreled into Christian Rasmussen and Rinus VeeKay, which earned him a penalty.
IndyCar’s end of season marathon continues next weekend, with drivers heading to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a double-header on the one mile oval.
