New US race included in Formula E Season 11 calendar

The Homestead-Miami Speedway will make its debut in the FIA Formula E World Championship next year, with the Season 11 calendar having been announced by the FIA.

Season 11 will be the biggest yet, with 17 races across 11 weekends. This means six double-headers, including the first to be held in Monaco, on the third and fourth of May.

Tokyo, which made its debut this season – in what was the first major sporting event aside from the local marathon to close the city – returns, also as a double-header, as rounds nine and 10 on the 17th and 18th of May, subject to Tokyo Metropolitan Government approval.

The season kicks-off in São Paulo on the seventh of December, the venue moving from March, with this season’s opener in Mexico moving to round two on the 11th of January. Rounds three and four will take place in Saudi Arabia over the weekend of Valentine’s Day, with the location yet to be determined.

Round five is a venue also yet to be determined, with the country also still under-wraps, but FE’s CEO Jeff Dodds has confirmed it will be a brand new race for the sport. The Miami E-Prix will take place on the 12th of April, on an as-yet confirmed circuit layout comprised within the oval in the speedway.

After Monaco and Tokyo, the Shanghai E-Prix returns on the 31st of May and 1st of June, with Jakarta returning after a one-season hiatus on the 21st of June.

Berlin’s double-header moves from May to the 12th and 13th of July, with London – expected to be hosting a race weekend for the final time – closing-out the season on July 26th and 27th.

One glaring omission is an Italian venue of any kind, with Misano – deeply unpopular with much of the drivers and FE purists after this season’s double-header – not renewed. When asked about this, Dodds told Motorsport Week: “Italy is a very rich motorsport market, very passionate fans, but maybe not as passionate about electric motorsport yet but we definitely want to establish a home in Italy, so that’s never been in question.

“We raced in Rome for a long time, and everyone knows that a combination of our cars getting faster, and the circuit being properly maxed-out in our ability to race faster cars on it, as well a little bit about economics as well meant that Rome didn’t look like it was a long-term home for us, particularly as we head to GEN3 Evo and we’ve got our eyes on GEN4.

“Misano came to us as an option, so we tried it, and I must say we were made to feel so incredibly welcome by them; the facilities were great, the leadership team were brilliant. I was at both those races and it felt like a lovely event, but the reality is, because of the location, which is quite a way away from the nearest airport, and the style of racing which not all the drivers loved, it didn’t feel to like it would be a long-term home.

“We feel we need to be closer to a large city, and ideally on a street circuit, so our view is if they aren’t going to be our permanent home, let’s introduce a different venue [round five, TBD] and keep looking and making sure we get the right home for Italy in the future.”
