Vowles predicts all F1 teams will have overweight 2026 cars

Williams Team Principal James Vowles has predicted that each Formula 1 side will fail to the minimum weight limit when new Formula 1 cars are introduced in 2026.

The sport will oversee an overhaul to the chassis and engine regulations in 2026, with the power output split between the internal combustion engine and hybrid unit.

The latest generation powertrains are set to be heavier than the current ones, somewhat counteracting the reduction in size that will come from the cars themselves.

Therefore, Vowles has stated that he expects all the teams on the grid to begin pre-season testing with their new creations struggling to hit the minimum weight limit.

Why Haas has no interest in selling its F1 team despite ‘numerous offers’

This was prevalent upon F1’s return to ground effect cars in 2022, when the Sauber-owned squad gained an advantage out the blocks with a car lighter than its rivals.

However, the Hinwil-based squad’s competitiveness would decline as the rest reduced excess bulk, with Vowles explaining how impactful added weight is to a team.

“I think by 2026 [Williams will] be in a sensible place [with car weight],” the Williams boss told Autosport.

“But even then, ’26 has very interesting regulations at the moment that reward weight in a way that no other championship has, because it’s such a low number.

“I don’t believe anyone can hit that. That’s on the side. But even beyond there, we need to make sure that we have a car that you can continually add downforce to in the wind tunnel at the right rate, so it’s a competitive level. That’s got to be what you want.”

James Vowles (GBR) Williams Racing Team Principal. 18.05.2024. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 7, Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Imola, Italy, Qualifying Day.

In addition to the problems Williams is encountering with weight this term, the Grove-based squad was also hampered through a shortage of parts in earlier rounds.

Vowles has been critical about the position Williams has been in, citing there is not a single area that he is satisfied with as he strives to return the team to the top.

“There is not one area of this company that I am happy we are at the level required so we can fight for a championship. Not one,” he admitted.

“That’s a bold statement, but a truthful statement of it as well.

“Weight is the one that everyone out here will understand now why we’re saying we’re on the right path, but we’ve got a lot of things we need to address and fix.

“I’ve said from the beginning, we’re open about it. We’re going to be here and take you on the journey of what we’re doing and why it’s so difficult, and why Formula 1 is exceptional.

“But we will get there. Weight is just the one that’s slapping us on the face today, but that’s not the main issue.”
