Lewis Hamilton has stated that having the potential chance to work with Adrian Newey in Formula 1 would be a “privilege” amid rumours that he could move to Ferrari.
Amid growing rumours earlier this week, Red Bull announced that Newey’s near two-decade association with the team would come to a close at the beginning of 2025.
The Briton – who stands as F1’s most famed designer with 25 championships, including 13 titles during his time with Red Bull – has been linked with a switch to Ferrari.
Newey has admitted that he regrets not having worked with Hamilton, but that could change amid the seven-time champion’s impending move to the marque next term.
Asked how much he would like Newey to arrive at Ferrari alongside him next season, Hamilton answered: “Very much!”
He added: “Adrian’s got such a great history, track record, and he’s just done an amazing job throughout his career in engaging with teams and the knowledge that he has.
“I think he would be an amazing addition.
“I think they’ve got a great team, they’re already making huge progress and strides forward – their car is quicker this year – but it would be a privilege to work with him.”
But Hamilton was reticent on whether Newey was mentioned to him during his negotiations with Ferrari Chairman John Elkann and Team Principal Frederic Vasseur.
“I mean, this is all very much private conversation stuff,” he underlined. “If I was to do a list of people I would like to work with he would absolutely be at the top of it.”
Pressed to assess the chances that he could get the chance to drive a car that Newey has been the mastermind behind, Hamilton added: “I don’t know. We’ll see.”
Hamilton will be aiming to achieve a record eighth title when he moves across to the Maranello-based squad, which hasn’t won a single championship since 2008.
But the British driver has suggested that his decision to trade Mercedes for Ferrari was based on the existing structure that Elkann and Vasseur are putting in place.
“Right now nothing changes because I don’t know what’s happening in the future,” he addressed.
“All I know is that I’m joining a team that’s massively enthusiastic and driven and as I said, doing a great job now and have amazing history. So nothing has really changed so far.”
