Norris doesn’t anticipate substantial F1 changes until 2026

McLaren’s Lando Norris reckons Formula 1 will have to wait until the introduction of new technical regulations in 2026 to see a wholesale shake-up in the pecking order.

The 2024 season has been a continuation from the end of the previous campaign in relation to teams’ standings, with Red Bull retaining an edge over the competition.

Reigning World Champion Max Verstappen has won the first two events of the season, but a braking problem led to an early retirement in the Australian Grand Prix.

And Norris is not expecting a huge change in the grid until the new 2026 regulations take over, which will feature an overhaul to both the engine and chassis regulations.

“No, I think for things to really shake up, you need to wait until 2026,” Norris assessed.

“I think that could potentially be a big shake-up for every team, including the power units probably being one of the biggest things.”

With the 2026 regulations, F1 intends to transition to fully sustainable fuel, while also shifting towards a greater reliance on electrical power and adding more horsepower.

Despite the new engines potentially leading to a major reshuffle among the grid, Norris thinks Red Bull will still have the edge over the rest due to its continued aero gains.

“They’re just as smart, smarter in many ways, that if they do just as good of a job as any other team, they should always carry the advantage that they have, but you do hope that they start to run out of good ideas,” said the British driver.

“I think every team is catching up. Even if you look at our 12 months of progress from last year, we’ve been the team who have developed the most, and we’re the best-developing team over the last 12 months.

“So, when you look at it from that perspective, I think we can be very happy with the job that we’re doing. But it’s not enough, and it’s not close enough to challenge them.”

The Woking-based team will continue its alliance with Mercedes Powertrains until at least 2030, meaning it will keep its current status as a customer outfit.
