Stroll coy on assurances over retaining Aston Martin F1 drive

Lance Stroll has been coy surrounding questions about him being assured of a place with Aston Martin’s Formula 1 team, citing that he is fixated on the coming season.

Stroll has been associated with the British outfit since moving across from Williams in 2019, following his father Lawrence’s takeover of the entity the previous year.

The Canadian has remained ever-present through the team’s transition into Aston Martin, where he has been partnered by Sebastian Vettel and then Fernando Alonso.

But while the contract lengths of his respective team-mates have been disclosed, the terms of Stroll’s agreement with the Silverstone squad have remained concealed.

When he was asked whether his future with Aston Martin was secured with his father’s presence, Stroll answered: I’m focused on this year right now. I’m driving in green.

“And I’m very motivated. And also, just excited and happy to be a part of this incredible project we have going at AMF1; we’ve grown so much as a team over the last five years.

“There were many very talented people here for a long time, before it was Aston Martin. And along with a lot of talented people, a lot of new talented people have joined the team recently over the last couple of years, and we have this new factory now. We have a wind tunnel in the process of being built.

“And all I’m thinking about is how exciting times are right now at Aston Martin, and that I’m you know, looking forward and focused on the season ahead.”

Aston Martin Team Principal Mike Krack has insisted that its priority is to retain its current driver line-up beyond the end of this season.

“We have two great drivers,” Krack commented when asked about the driver market. “And to be honest, they’re so integrated into the team that we just do everything that we can to keep them.

“As I said before the silly season is in full swing. But we are quite confident that we can achieve what we want, which is to continue with both drivers in 2025 and the future.”

Stroll experienced a tumultuous campaign in 2023 that was disrupted from the outset as he missed pre-season testing after breaking both wrists in a pre-season cycling accident.

The ex-Williams racer was unfortunate to be overcoming his injuries when Aston Martin’s form nosedived, which contributed to him trailing a seismic 132 points behind Alonso.

However, Aston Martin Technical Director Dan Fallows has praised Stroll’s input in helping the team overcome the struggles that it encountered with car development.

“I think we’re very fortunate with our drivers, and they’re both very good at giving feedback and very good at telling us what they need out of the car,” Fallows said.

“And then it’s up to us to deliver that. We haven’t always done that, but we’ve learned a lot about how to do that last season, and it absolutely came through.

“I think you see the way that the car performed towards the end of the season, that was a combination of a lot of learning, but a lot of feedback – and that came from both drivers.

“I don’t see that we sort of lost out on that in any way. We’re very fortunate, I think with our pair and we’re looking forward to working with them both again this year.”
