Gasly concedes first half of 2023 season ‘not good’

Pierre Gasly (FRA) Alpine F1 Team A523. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 12, Hungarian Grand Prix, Saturday 22nd July 2023. Budapest, Hungary.

Pierre Gasly has conceded that the opening half of his and Alpine’s 2023 Formula 1 season “has not been good” amid a lack of tangible results.

Gasly joined Alpine from AlphaTauri for 2023 but holds only 12th in the championship at the mid-point of the campaign and has yet to finish a race inside the top six.

Gasly has added only two points to his tally across the most recent five grands prix, having been involved in a spate of setbacks, most notably a first-lap clash caused by Zhou Guanyu in Hungary.

“Ultimately, it’s not been a good first part of the season for us and that is shown with our results.

“We’ve had some very positive moments just sometimes without the reward to show for it: Australia while in fifth place before the incident and qualifying performances in Miami and Spain for example.

“When we piece everything together, we look strong but we have to target more complete performances between now and the rest of the season.

“There are areas where, as a team, we must strive for better and I’m sure we can turn things around.

“I look forward to Belgium this weekend, where I’m targeting a good outing, before we have the summer break.”

McLaren’s surge in performance has shuffled Alpine back to sixth in the championship ahead of an update package being introduced onto the A523 this weekend.

“As a team, it’s important we stick together, keep our heads down and keep working hard to bring better results,” Gasly said.

“We have an upgrade this weekend and hopefully that will all go to plan and bring some additional performance to the car which we need now. It’s another Sprint weekend, which brings more opportunities to score points.”
