Perez: Red Bull has ‘good data’ despite FP1 crash

Sergio Perez says Red Bull has walked away from Friday practice at the Hungaroring with some “good data” despite his early crash.

Minutes into the first session of the weekend, Perez clipped the grass on the entry to Turn 5 and spun into the barrier.

His car sustained suspension damage that ruled him out of the remainder of the session.

However, there wasn’t much meaningful running elsewhere on the grid as the rain arrived soon after.

Perez returned to the track in FP2 but managed to clock just 13 laps – the fewest in the field. His best effort placed him in 18th.

Reflecting on the FP1 incident, Perez held up his hands and admitted fault for the crash.

“It was just a mistake from my side,” the Mexican driver said.

“But the guys have done a tremendous job to get the car back together and get some running in in FP2. I believe we got some good data to get through.”

Perez’s crash comes during a poor run of form in qualifying, which has placed question marks over his future within the Red Bull team.

The Milton Keynes-based squad has dominated the opening 10 races of the season, with Max Verstappen taking eight of the victories on offer.

Red Bull has arrived at the Hungaroring with upgrades to its car – but Perez states that it is “very early” to judge their potential.

“Even with the little running, we end up doing with the tyre format we have, [it is early],” he said.

“I think we will have a better idea tomorrow, certainly the grid looks really tight.

“It will be very important to be able to get a good balance on all compounds because in qualifying we are going to be going through them all.

“I think we got good information and managed to run the medium tyre as well. Some good info there.”
