Aston Martin has to be ready if Red Bull falters – Krack

Fernando Alonso (ESP) Aston Martin F1 Team AMR23. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 7, Monaco Grand Prix, Friday 26th May 2023. Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Mike Krack says Aston Martin needs to be ready to grasp any opportunity that may fall its way in 2023 if Red Bull suffers a setback.

Red Bull has won all six races so far in 2023, the majority in commanding fashion, with Max Verstappen triumphant on four occasions, and Sergio Perez victorious twice.

Aston Martin – courtesy of Fernando Alonso – has finished as the highest non-Red Bull team at four of those six events, dropping behind Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in Australia and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in Azerbaijan.

Alonso recorded his and Aston Martin’s best finish of 2023 in Monaco by taking second place, behind only Verstappen, with Perez stymied by a crash in Q1.

“There will be an occasion where maybe Red Bull has a reliability issue or whatever,” said Krack.

“The season is long — we have not so many power units and all these kinds of things. So there will maybe be an opportunity, and then we have to be the ones that are there.

“So far we have managed that on most of the occasions, and we have always to be 100 per cent to be up there, and then the results are coming.

“We see one Red Bull was not there this time, and then you have to be the one that takes a second [place].”

Krack expressed hope of remaining in podium contention at this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix.

“We need to see how the upgrades of the others are working out,” he said. “The Ferrari is usually very strong in Barcelona.

“There is a new game of play, but we will do our homework, and I think we should be competitive.”

Aston Martin holds second in the Constructors’ Championship, one point ahead of Mercedes, with Ferrari 29 points back.
