Russell: No need to clear the air with Verstappen after Baku clash
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

George Russell has criticised Max Verstappen for how he reacted to their opening lap collision at last weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The duo came together at Turn 2, with Verstappen suffering sidepod damage in the clash.

Russell completed the overtake at Turn 3 but later fell behind Verstappen, who went on to cross the line in second place.

After the chequered flag, Verstappen confronted Russell in parc ferme and said to “expect the same” the next time they went racing.

Russell stated that Verstappen acted hypocritically in the situation.

“It was all a little bit pathetic,” the Mercedes driver told Sky F1. “Something you learn as a kid is if you’re willing to give something, you’ve got to take it as well.

“He’s had his fair share of giving moves like that and being tough and hard at racing.

“It’s a little bit poor to see how he spat his dummy out when it’s the first time he probably got something back in the same regard.

“So from my side, there’s nothing really to say. I thought it was good racing, exciting racing. That’s the only thing that happened that weekend.

“It was pretty poor otherwise. We’re both drivers, we’ve both been in the sport a long time now.

“We’ve got plenty of experience, we’ll have a chat. Everything is fine.”

Prior to the clash in the sprint, Russell endured a difficult qualifying session for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as he dropped out in Q2.

When asked what was the cause of the disappointing result, Russell said: “I’m not too sure. It’s fine margins I think.

“We missed out on Q3 by four milliseconds and that would have been a totally different story had we got into Q3, and probably we could have qualified inside the top six but clearly our car isn’t quick enough.

“We need to continue to do a better job and we’ll go again this weekend. Hopefully, there’ll be a slightly smoother weekend and we can battle out with Aston and Ferrari.”
