Perez got ‘different information’ to Verstappen over fastest lap
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Sergio Perez claims that he received different information to team-mate Max Verstappen when it came to discussing the fastest lap of the race in Jeddah.

Perez dominated the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix en route to victory while Verstappen recovered from 15th to take second place.

Verstappen requested over the team radio what the fastest lap time was towards the end of the race, with the Red Bull pit wall stating it was not concerned with the matter.

Perez was told to keep to a certain lap time, but Verstappen notched the extra point for the fastest time at the chequered flag, leaving Perez to question the team’s communication.

“I asked two laps from the end, when they told me to keep a certain pace, they told me I had the fastest lap and to keep a certain pace,” Perez said.

“So I thought the communication was the same to Max, so something we need to review, because I got certainly different information and I just couldn’t push there in the end.”

Providing his point of view, Verstappen added: “With a few laps to go, I asked what the fastest lap was.

“We were first of all free to race, and we had a target lap time to the end. But there’s a point on the line, it was the same in Bahrain, it got asked.

“Especially when it’s just between the two cars, I think that it’s quite normal that you ask what the fastest lap is.”

However, Perez says he was happy that Red Bull seemed happy to let both of their drivers race.

“No, I think it was, obviously they have more information than us, and I think the team did a fantastic job in letting us race,” he said.

“I just felt like there was a point where, I don’t know, for the last 10 laps or so, that we had very similar pace within a tenth faster or slower.

“I just felt like the gap, it would have been probably a little bit less or a little bit more. But it wouldn’t have changed anything.

“I was just thinking about the car, just making sure, I was having some strange vibrations, and what happened to Max was in the back of my mind today and I’m sure it was in the back of the mind of the team as well.

“So it’s just a matter of making sure both cars finished to get maximum points.”
